My fearless (but ultimately accurate) iPad prediction

I played around with it today. It’ll be a success. But not an iPhone or iPod-level success.

Two reasons. One, people won’t want to carry around another device. They already carry around a phone and a laptop.

And two, it won’t replace the laptop because typing on is still iPhone-terrible. And people do still type.

Wait for the MacBook with iPad-like touch-screen functionality, people. It’s coming.

You are wrong on this. The iPad will become the new template for most computers. It will have a greater impact than the iPod. Dell and HP will lamely try to deliver an imitation - unsuccessfully, and within a couple of years the PC industry will be completely different - due to the iPad.

You batting average will not be helped by your iPad prediction.

The big complaint about the iPhone, the reason why it would not succeed, was that it lacked a keyboard. Have you noticed how all smartphones look remarkably similar to the iPhone. The rest of the phone industry now is in pure iPhone imitation mode. How long will it be before the PC industry trots out iPad looking devices running Android or some other strange operating system, but with the same look and feel of the iPad?

The iPad sold 1 million units in the US in less than a month. Less than half the time it took to sell 1 million iPhones. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100503/ap_on_hi_te/us_tec_apple_ipad

I'm taking the long view, Clark. Check back in a year.

I will check back. In the next year I do not expect informed consumers to buy cheap net books with Windows and keyboards for web surfing if they can get an iPad for the same price. And I don't expect them to buy the iPad imitations that Dell and HP rush out with no innovation of their own. It is as certain that the iPad will succeed as it that Chicago will produce only corrupt politicians. Apple produces innovation and excellence; Chicago produces crooks. And the people in Chicago now actually prefer crooks.

Looks like you were right. Many Apple stores will sell zero iPads today.
