You're probably right. It has just the right amount of drama and cuteness. It's performed well by the kid. Nice edit, etc. But really, what the hell does it have to do with the car? Don't get me wrong. I like it. It's charming. And as I said, you're probably right. But it's borrowed interest (at its best) and has not a thing to do with that car. Nothing.
I kind of think you're missing the point. Does it have anything to do with the car? Not really. Will it cause millions of people to think better of Volkswagen and maybe even cause a some of them to put it on their consideration list? I think it just might. That's a good trade-off.
What??? I'm going to put that car on my list because the company that made it paid an ad agency to do something clever? "Honey, let's go looks at a VW. You know, they had that clever Star Wars ad."
I've never bought into the argument that "any company could do this ad so we shouldn't run it." Fizdale applied that argument to the Oldsmobile campaign Ned and I had. But it at least showed the car being desirable.
But there is nothing, absolutely nothing about this car in this commercial. Oh, wait. It comes with a key fob.
I think people will remember the commercial. They'll remember the kid, they'll remember Star Wars and they'll like it. It'll be number one in USA Today, as you predicted. But it will not result in any positive effect for VW. Because few will remember it was for VW.
I am going to consider a VW today because it reminds me of why I love VW. They get me. And remote starting the car in winter is a feature that is clearly demonstrated. They also know about women's secret love of Darth Vader.

And now what do you think?
Loved it. I don't know if it will sell more VWs or not.
Did you like any others?
