Let's all go to the DMV (as opposed to SXSW)

I'm going to openly plagiarize something I read today because it's so awesome. It's from Ad Contrarian, a blog you should read.

He says, "I'm thinking of making a monthly trip to the DMV a condition of employment for everyone on my staff.

"I want them to see what the people they're making ads for really look like. I want them to see the people they never see at the restaurants they go to; never see at the bars they frequent; never see at the focus groups they attend; and never hear from on Twitter.

"In other words, I want them to see the 'consumer' they're all so very certain they know everything about."

THe Ad Contrarian is the MAN...I never miss him. And yes, we should ALL know who the customer is. Head to corner tavern or the auto parts store around here....and there they are!

I realized after I wrote that, adchick, that I can't go to the DMV in Chicago for no reason because you have to go there to renew a license or something. You can't just hang out.

So, this is the advice, "I'm thinking of making a monthly trip to the DMV a condition of employment for everyone on my staff. I want them to see what the people they're making ads for really look like"

I think the translation for this is "the people you write ads for are rubes, and to see them you need to go to exotic places you as a cool person would not visit, like the DMV. Think of it as a trip to the zoo. The DMV people don't eat in restaurants or go to bars we would frequent. The might even vote for Sarah Palin. So don't stay too long. These people could be dangerous - with their guns and all."

The DMV. The definition of the state. Services delivered by the state. But the proletariat does work there. If you are the fortunate bourgeois you won't see these people often. But remember, Alinsky is teaching the proletariat to destroy the bourgeouis. That's Alinsky - not Palin.

Clark,

I think the fact that you're referring to the people who frequent the DMV as animals is pretty telling. That's you, not me (or the article).
