Crispin, Again

I'm tired of talking about them. You're tired of talking about them. But the point is, we talk about them. And isn't that what they teach you in Famous Ad Guy's school, to above all, make sure your ad is noticed?

I thought the Seinfeld/Gates ads were pretty weak. I said when they were running, 'I don't know what they're trying to do, but what they should REALLY be trying do is say, you know what, we're everywhere, we own 90% of the desktops in this world, and we're not going to apologize for that. We're going to let Apple be a cool little niche brand. But we're the 10-ton gorilla. And we're proud of it.'

And wouldn't you know it, in the next phase of the campaign, they've done it.

I'm done talking about Crispin.

David Foster Wallace

Shocking and sad. A genius writer, funny and unbelievably smart. I've never read anyone like him.

If you can find it, his piece on tennis player Michael Joyce is well worth your time, even if you have no interest in tennis. Also his account of taking a cruise vacation in 'A Supposedly Funny Thing I'll Never Do Again.' And (poignant now) 'The Depressed Person', an essay from one of his books, I can't remember which. Even his self-indulgent stuff was fascinating.

He wrote so well it made you want to not write.
